SCHOOL ZONE 4-24-14

NEW 2014-2015 SCHOOL CALENDAR AVAILABLE

Our school calendar for 2014-2015 was recently revised in compliance with the State of Ohio mandate that we switch from minimum instructional days to hours of instruction.  A copy of the new calendar can be downloaded from our district website using the link at the top of the page.  One of the major changes is that school will end on May 29, 2015.  We hope this earlier ending date will be helpful to our local vendors.

FILM STUDENTS HONORED AT LOCAL FILM FESTIVAL

Several Vermilion High School students were selected for outstanding film work and earned a spot as finalists in the Hathaway Brown iMagine Film Festival this year.  Those chosen to have their films screened by the judges are:  Eric McGuinn, Jason Nestor-Blackman, Nicole Fiegi, Joey Rini, Bryan Martin and Ryley Miller.  The iMagine Film Festival was created in 2012 in an effort to provide northeast Ohio high school filmmakers a venue for exhibiting their original films and to receive constructive feedback from local industry professionals.  In the past, students had very few opportunities in the area to share their films.  The festival was designed with the intention of doing more than simply awarding prizes to the winners. The iMagine Film Festival allows participants to be acknowledged for their efforts, and receive personal feedback from a professional panel of judges.  The festival will take place Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights. The program is free and open to the public. Links to student videos created by Vermilion students and more information about the Hathaway Brown Film Festival is available on our website.

VERMILION, FIRELANDS AND WESTERN RESERVE BASEBALL TEAMS SUPPORT A.L.S.

The Sailor Baseball team will host the second annual PHAALS Foundation game  with Firelands and Western Reserve High Schools on Saturday, April 26.  PHAALS stands for “Playing Hardball Against ALS" (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  As many reading this will recall, Lou Gehrig was a Hall of Fame baseball player for the New York Yankees, who died from A.L.S. at an early age.  The PHAALS Foundation’s mission is to create awareness about this deadly disease, assist families that have been affected and raise money for research.  During each day of the event, baseball players will be collecting loose change donations during the school lunch periods.  A dime or quarter a day will be appreciated.  On Friday the schools will sponsor $1.00 baseball cap day.  A donation of $1.00 is required for permission to wear a baseball cap in school all day.  On Saturday, April 26, the Sailors will play Firelands at 10:00 AM, Firelands will play Western Reserve at 1:00 PM, and then the Sailors will play Western Reserve at 3:00 PM.  We hope the community will come out to see some great baseball, and help our team support this worthy cause.

REMINDER: SECURITY MEETING – APRIL 16
This important meeting of the community is being held to review procedures, policies and security measures that are available in our schools and district. It is an opportunity for you to learn what we currently have in place and offer your thoughts and ideas about improving security. The meeting will be Wednesday, April 16 at 6:30 PM. This topic becomes more relevant as tragedies continue to be reported nationwide. We can never over-emphasize the importance of keeping our buildings secure.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
Parents of incoming Kindergarten students are highly encouraged to attend our information program “Sail into Kindergarten” on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 PM. Children who will be 5 years old by September 30, 2014 are eligible to attend Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year. Parents may register on-line by logging on the district website at www.vermilionschools.org. Under the “Parents” tab, scroll to “New Student Registration” and follow the directions for the online pre-registration process. Parents should complete the online pre-registration prior to the evening program. Staff will be on hand at "Sail into Kindergarten" to assist those who need help with the pre-registration process.

BLIZZARD BAG ASSIGNMENTS DUE APRIL 21
The “Blizzard Bag” assignments that were distributed to students prior to spring break must be completed and turned in to teachers by April 21. Teachers and principals are available to assist students who may be struggling to complete the work on time. We have found that parents and students have been very cooperative and understanding as we work to comply with state mandates.

PAPERLESS REPORT CARDS

Our schools will begin offering online report cards to families following the end of the 3rd quarter of this school year. Parents will have the ability to access report cards through the parent portal in Power School. Third quarter report cards should be accessible by the week of April 14. As this is a pilot program, we will continue to print report cards for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year. Our goal will be to move to a paperless system by next year. Parents who have not registered for a parent portal account should do so as soon as possible so that you can gain access to your child’s grades. Should you have trouble signing up or accessing the parent portal, please contact the school office for assistance.
