STUDENT SAFETY AT BUS STOPS
May 01, 2012
The Vermilion Police Department is investigating all of these reports and have stepped up patrols in the areas of concern. Vermilion school bus drivers were given descriptions of the vehicles and were asked to report any suspicious activity as they drive bus routes through the community.
Both Police Chief Chris Hartung and I agree that parents should immediately take time to speak to their children about talking to or approaching strangers. Make sure that your children understand that they should run away or know how to remove themselves from danger. Talk with your neighbors and create neighborhood watch groups to assist with security as children walk to and from bus stops.
Parents should be extra cautious and report any incidents to police with as many details as possible. It is especially important that they be given a good description of the vehicle, including a license plate number, the type of clothing being worn by the driver, and any distinctive facial features.
We will continue to work in cooperation with the Vermilion Police Department in this matter, and will do what we can to assist with their investigation.
Philip M. Pempin, Superintendent
